"Lu Chin Chen's Revenge, the second full length release from this member of the T.R.P hip hop crew, is built upon a foundation of potent lyricism. Lu is a really talented rhymer and on this album is able to come across as both clever and profound."

A Popup Interview with Lu Chin Chen

CK:

Do you feel that "underground" is just a marketing term like anything else?

Lu Chin Chen:

I feel that underground just means it's not in your face being overplayed by corporate radio/video stations every day. It can consist of potentially successful mainstream music that just needs a chance, or music that will never get a chance because the skill and quality level just isn't there. I support it reguardless of talent just for an individual having the balls to express their thoughts, styles and opinions for anyone willing to listen..and deal with critics and haters. That's tough sometimes. You just gotta let it slide tho.

CK:

How big of an impact do you think the underground, indie scene has on the current pop culture?

Lu Chin Chen:

Underground always changes pop culture. They take the most obvious part of underground style and turn it into something more shiny usually. Usually watered down but the upside is it can open doors for underground artist who master the art of the style that's bitten. Right now I don't see much underground influence in pop/hip pop culture...it's pretty much as bad as it's ever been at this time. It'll come back around tho.

CK:

Tell us about your worst gig and why it was so bad.

Lu Chin Chen:

I did a show with this squad I rock wit. It was a feature I did on one of their tracks...one verse..and I cause chaos in less than 2 minutes on stage. It was free drinks for performers and I took full advantage before I hit the stage. I was definitely stumblin to the stage and I was standin in the middle between the other 2 cats. The wires for the sound and the mics ran up the middle. When my verse came up I stood on the cables and all the sound turned off except the mics. I kept goin wit my verse. They started the beat over and I started right wit my verse when they wanted to start the whole track..I did my verse anyway, droppped the mic and went back for more drinks. Funny when I look back but damn...

CK:

Are you looking to get a record deal? Why?

Lu Chin Chen:

I definitely want a record deal but only if it comes with promotion. I need backing financially or I might as well keep grindin myself. Why pay someone else if they aren't earning it. The more promotion...the more people will hear you and love what you do....or hate it ..but I don't worry bout that..with every one hater there's about 10 fans boppin their head..fuck it.

CK:

What would you like to change about your city's local music scene?

Lu Chin Chen:

Not a lot of support from fellow artists or local hip hop listeners for the most part. NY, ATL, LA, ..they all shine cuz they grind as one..Mass don't got a whole lot of unity but everyone knows that's a problem so hopefully that will change one day.

CK:

Introduce the members in the band:

Lu Chin Chen:

It's Me...12-10 is my production team name.I also have a production partner when I make beats..Mark D. Dude is an animal..he can mix and master official industry quality and has an incredible musical mind. I come up with all the foundations and he adds that stardust on the top that makes it bang. I rock wit Track One and Jon Hero's production also for some songs and my affiliates Shuteye,Sham, MP,Howard Iz aka X Con...and a few others..a lot of other cats from the past ..need to find them bastids!

CK:

If you wanted to make your own genre name, what would it be?

Lu Chin Chen:

Street Wave....That's what I call the sound that we make for 12-10. Street shit with a New Wave twist on the chords and some of the loops..Street Wave baby!

CK:

What do you think of the Gothic Culture?

Lu Chin Chen:

I don't think about Gothic Culture..I'm not part of it. But to each his own. If they like that type of stuff ..go for yours. Just don't be tryin to drink my blood or some shit like that..I ain't with that at all...

CK:

Name and describe your most memorable gig.

Lu Chin Chen:

Most memorable Gig has gotta be the first gig..just because it was the first one...we rented a spot out and had people from all over the area come thru to show love. I was in a deep squad from different cities so it was diverse..first time you got that rush and realized how much you loved the mic. Good ol days.

CK:

How do you transport your equipment to the gig?

Lu Chin Chen:

My equiptment consists of a mic and cd...not too hard to transport that...talk to the dj's about that one.

CK:

What is important to you about the music?

Lu Chin Chen:

The most important thing to me is to make sure it 1,represents me correct, and 2,is something I can be proud of no matter who I show it to or perform it for. Plus I gotta feel it..If I listen to it subjectively...and act like it ain't me...and feel it for what it is..that's how I know...for real.

CK:

What you feel is the most important thing about your music?

Lu Chin Chen:

Reality...entertainment..a message...a story...to wrap it all up..DIVERSITY! change up to keep people interested.

CK:

Do you do any recording on your own?

Lu Chin Chen:

Nah..I go to other people's studios but I'm bout to start building a studio this year..start recording myself and network with my people thru the computer..less traveling that way and quicker song output.

CK:

So, tell me..what exactly, motivates you, the artist to write songs?

Lu Chin Chen:

Writing helps me to release stress and talk about things that have meaning to me and in my life..and it allows me to explore different concepts and techniques. Nothing better than grabbin some Heineken wit a beat cd and just shuttin out the world..let the beats take over your mind. That is electric relaxation to me right there..Tribe said it..that's peace.

CK:

How many members in the band write music?

Lu Chin Chen:

I do...with 12-10...Lu Chin Chen people...remember the name and remember my songs..Guaranteed to feel something I got for you..A good chef got more than 1 cook book.I'm rewriting recipes. Peeeeeeace. to be continued.
